22/09/2011 - Operations

On Thursday 22nd September, 2001, Corio and South Barwon SES Units were called to an
industrial rescue in Douro St, North Geelong.

Upon arrival SES found 2 patients that were trapped inside a shipping container, pinned by
sheets of aluminium.

Corio and South Barwon SES, alongside Geelong City CFA Rescue have worked extremely
hard using a large amount of Rescue Equipment to free the 2 patients from the container.

Some of the gear that was used included Hydraulic Rams, Air Bags, and the Jaws of Life.

South Barwon SES Spokesman Scott Clark said it was a complex rescue situation.

“We have had to use a large amount of rescue gear to extricate the 2 patients. SES and
CFA have done an amazing job working together as a team to assist Ambulance Victoria to
get a really good result.” Mr Clark said.

The first of the two casualties was released after approx. 30 mins, with the second being
released after approx. 45 mins.

Corio SES Incident Controller Jason Maxwell said the rescue environment was reasonably
difficult for emergency service workers.

“Being a shipping container, access to the casualties was limited, and also being a confined
space, it also was quite warm”

2 SES Rescue Trucks, with 10 SES volunteers attended the scene.
