On Saturday 24th September, 2011, at approx. 03:15 am, South Barwon SES Volunteers were called to a car accident with persons trapped on Surf Coast Hwy, Mt Duneed. SES Media Liaison Officer Scott Clark said the first of 2 SES Rescue trucks arrived on scene and were met with a car that had collided with a fence post, coming to rest in a precarious position on its side, up against a tree. South Barwon SES crews, along with Geelong City CFA Rescue, used Hydraulic Rescue equipment to free 1 patient from the wreckage. Rescue crews worked for over 30 mins to free the patient from the wreckage, before being airlifted to hospital. South Barwon SES Spokesman Scott Clark said “The vehicle has come to rest on its side, up against a tree. SES Rescue Crews have had to use a chainsaw to gain access to the vehicle, before removing the roof.” The Air Ambulance landed on the Surf Coast Hwy to transport the patient to Melbourne. South Barwon SES Volunteers assisted Ambulance Victoria to load the patient into the waiting Air Ambulance before being airlifted to Hospital. SES Volunteers remained on scene for about an hour providing lighting and assisting in cleaning up of the scene. 2 SES Rescue Trucks with 13 SES Volunteers were responded to the incident.
