On Friday 30th September, 2011, at approx. 10:30 am, South
Barwon SES Volunteers were called to a car accident with
persons trapped at the intersection Johnston Ave and Dorwood
Ave in Newcomb.
SES Media Liaison Officer Scott Clark said the first of 2 SES
Rescue trucks arrived on scene and were met with a car that
had collided with another vehicle, with one coming to rest on its
side.
South Barwon SES Spokesman Scott Clark said “The vehicle
that had come to rest on its side required the rear hatch to be
opened with the “Jaws of Life” before lifting the patient out on a
spine board.” Mr Clark said
Meanwhile, less than an hour later, at the intersection of
Moorabool and Fyans St, South Barwon SES Volunteers were
again called to an accident, this time involving 2 cars, and a
near fully loaded bus.
South Barwon SES were first on scene and were met with an
extremely busy and chaotic scene, with 1 patient trapped in
their vehicle, 1 person laying on the nature strip with injuries,
and approx. 25 people on the bus, some with minor injuries.
SES Rescue Crews, together with CFA worked for nearly 30
mins to free the casualty from the vehicle by removing the
doors, before assisting Ambulance Victoria to extricate the
patient.
South Barwon SES Incident Controller Tim Hutton said “It
certainly was a busy scene with a lot happening. SES Crews
worked hard attending to the casualties both in the car, and on
the bus before Ambulance crews arrived.”
“Certainly with the number of passengers on the bus, the
potential for more serious injuries was a factor. Luckily there
were only minor injuries. Again with the high number of serious
road accidents in the region, the SES are pleading with drivers
to be more aware of their surroundings and take care on the
roads.” Mr Clark said.
SES Volunteers remained on scene for about 1 hour assisting
Police with traffic control.
2 SES Rescue Trucks with 9 SES Volunteers were responded
to the incident.
